Actorlympics is on again next week!

Vision Works brings you the Actorlympics Tigerrr Show, live improvisational comedy theatre straight from the perspiring loins of our dramatic corps of artistes – and we can guarantee THEY ARE ALL PROS!

Featuring Afdlin Shauki, Douglas Lim, Adibah Noor, Joanna Bessey, Nell Ng, Reza Zainal Abidin, Patrick Teoh, Fish Fazil, Na'a Murad and Jenhan. This is Malaysian sketch comedy at its best – a bigger troupe of Pros you’ll never see the like of except in our show!

And because we care, we are bringing you a show with a tongue-in-cheek theme that draws attention to the plight of our beleaguered Malayan Tiger, in this, our Year of the Tiger. Could it have gotten any worse for the poor Tiger in its own year? First, it’s already in danger, then some humans pimp it out for money. Well, we figure two can play at THAT game!

We have hooked up with WWF-Malaysia to bring more information and understanding to the theatregoing public – as well as the opportunity to find out how you can have a hand in doubling the current population of the Malayan Tiger!

So come on out for a night of fun and maybe you’ll learn something new about the Tiger and perhaps about us humans as well.

Alumnus Afdlin Shauki at the Osaka Film Fest with Papadom

Afdlin Shauki is in Osaka for the International Film Festival, as the director for "Papadom". The film was invited to be in competition, and tonight at the awards ceremony, it was given THIRD place out of an overall twelve international movies in the Audience Award category!

This category is an audience choice award, so it was gratifying to know that the Osaka Film Fest audiences appreciated Papadom enough to give it that accolade!

Douglas Lim had a dream. A dream to bring laughter to the world. A dream to spread joy across the land. Unfortunately, fate conspired against him. He was born Chinese and was not eligible for Raja Lawak.

But Douglas Lim never gave up. Convinced that the Chinese can be funny, he scoured the country for like-minded (and like-coloured) people. He searched high and low, far and wide and upside down. After 3 years, the search has ended. For behold, he is tired AND he has found 2 other jokers.

Together they are M.A.C.C. – the Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedians and this is their first E.G.M. (Easy Going Meeting). On the agenda are funny observations, song parodies, impersonations and witty revelations from the founding members of M.A.C.C – Douglas Lim, Jenhan and Chi Ho.

No stone is left unturned. Nothing is sacred – well except for sacred things which MUST NEVER be questioned by ALL Malaysians. M.A.C.C.’s first E.G.M. promises to be a laugh-out-loud affair for the whole family providing that your family is:

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

Douglas Lim

Douglas Lim is now primarily a STAND-UP COMEDIAN. But due to his greed, he is also many things. For example, he is an ACTOR on both screen and stage (1957 – Hati Malaya, Los & Faun, TenTenTen, Kopitiam, Homecoming, P.Ramlee the Musical, Tunku the Musical, Broken Bridges, etc…). He is also a COMPOSER & LYRICIST for tv and stage (Kopitiam, Reality, Ghost, Cuci the Musical, etc…).
His stand-up comedy performances include “Eh, Got Free Ticket Ah?” at Actors Studio Bangsar, Comedy Club KL, Comedy Club Singapore, Lake Club Comedy Night, Harith Iskander’s Nationwide Tour, “The June 4th Show” at No Black Tie and numeourous corporate events. Douglas Lim was nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy at the Asian TV Awards. He lost to Gurmit Singh (Phua Chu Kang)!

Kuah Jenhan

Having performed on stage since secondary school, Kuah Jenhan is a natural in the performing arts scene. He began his career in stand-up Comedy in The Actors Studio Bangsar's Freeflow and went on to win the Bond Stand-up Comedy Competition in 2006.
Now an actor, emcee and fresh from his recent appearance for Comedy Club KL alongside international starts Paul Chowdhry and Garry Who, he has performed in countless skits and plays over the years, from school, to college and now in Malaysian theatre including Rose Rose I Love You, No Limits and Ismail - The Last Days. Dubbed as "The Funniest Gravy (Kuah) of Malaysia", he can be found regularly performing his mix of locally inspired comedy at Time Out KL's Comedy Thursday and other YCOM shows around the city.

Phoon Chi Ho

A comedian, actor, director and producer; the multitalented Chi Ho has been in performing arts since he discovered his love for it in high school and have directed and acted in several plays during his college life. Upon graduating, he chose to delve into theatre management by becoming the theatre supervisor of The Actors Studio Bangsar. He now is a member of the skit-based The ComeBackKings, written, acted and directed 15 webisodes for gua.com and launched a successful stand-up comedy career in 2008.
He now performs regularly around the Klang Valley, organising and performing in comedy shows for the Young Comedians of Malaysia (YCOM), a local comedy support group. Cheeky and very original, his stand-up routine sees him putting on a facade that is more familiar to his Chinese heritage.

Hi Everyone,

If you don't already know, Vision Works' next movie Los Dan Faun, directed by Afdlin Shauki, will be released on December 4th this year. In tandem with that, we have been running a competition at Los Dan Faun and are now voting for the final round winner. Go check it out!

Also, veteran Actorlympian Harith Iskander will be off on his nationwide LIVE comedy tour soon!!

Supported by Actorlympics alum Douglas Lim, he will be visiting Penang, Miri Kota Kinabalu and Kuching and finally will be in KL in December.

When Superheroes Fly

Because of our very hectic schedules last year, with the release of Sumolah and eventual recording of Actorlympics for TV (NTV7, 9pm Wed), we only did one run of Actorlympics for the stage. As their producer I think it's better if the actors only do one or two runs a year, but the actors are such gluttons for pleasure and stimulus that they would do a run every month if they could.

So last year we only had the one run, with a Superheroes theme:

Look hard and you will find the 50% invisible boy, stapler man, chicken egg woman, elephant man, and so on. The actors came up with the ideas themselves, with some input from Isma, who drew the illustrations.

Boogey Boogey Boogey!!!

The next poster was for a run that was on the month before Halloween, so of course, we did a scary theme. Unfortunately we couldn't get many actors to come to the shoot date we specified because of time constraints. Still, it works, no?

The identities of the characters each actor chose were: Ida as Salma Hayek in "From Dusk Till Dawn"; Reza as Freddy Kreuger; Afdlin as Frankenstein; and poor Douglas as the kid from Ju-on.

Models United

In June we decided on a models theme because America's Next Top Model was on. Surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, the actors loved posing for Isma, and during the shoot we had music blaring to provide atmosphere, and I think someone may have set up a fan for the ladies.

We wanted them to look very touched up, shiny and feeyussssss.

On to February 2006

This was a run we had just before Sumolah began production. We thought it would be great to have a stage run in tandem with the Sumolah shoot, and it went down very well with the audience, particularly the opening number, which involved yukattas and lots of posing.

The shoot took a long time because we couldn't decide between sushi or noodles to pose with. It ended up being noodles because they were cheap and easily bought. The room was our conference room at the office, and involved the four metal clips we managed to round up from all our stationery, to hold up the cane blinds behind the boys.

You'll notice that there are only boys in the picture. One of the biggest imbalances in Actorlympics is the boy-girl ratio. We started out with Paula Malai Ali, Jo Kukathas and Joanna Bessey. Then Nell Ng and Ida Nerina came on board as regulars a few years back. But for this shoot, we could not get any girls to attend the shoot because of their schedules.

So Reza Zainal Abidin very graciously stepped up to the plate and makes a lovely geisha,, the only actual female character in the picture.

Design Heaven

So for our December 2005 run, we got Isma to design a poster for us, and he came up with the idea of giving everyone a cover shot on "famous" magazines.

As you can see, it was ambitious, delightful and impressed the bazookas off everyone. These were the flyers we had made for each individual actor:

Art History Lesson No 1: What NOT to do.

Here is a sampling of the posters I used to design myself for our Actorlympics! gigs.

As you can see, I was fairly mediocre in my abilities and creative flair.

When we decided we needed a professional to do the job, we found ourselves a designer fresh out of school, but wowing the theatre crowds with his abilities: Isma Yusoof. You can now catch him on TV's "Sindarella" orfind him on facebook or myspace. Be warned: He's in demand.

I'll post his first design for Actorlympics! in my next post.

We had a fantastic run for Actorlympics! last week, and here are a few photos for you to remember us by, or imagine what fun you missed out on if you didn't make it to the show!
